Overview

A spotlight has been put on battery technology development and manufacturing to accelerate meeting global energy demands. The volume requirements for lithium-ion batteries have grown exponentially over the last decade and innovations continue to push beyond the limits to provide better performance.

Understanding the physical characteristics of your core materials and how they function will open doors for researchers to develop better battery technology by design. Whether you are developing a completely new battery chemistry, experimenting with novel materials, or simply tweaking your existing formulation, material analysis will enable you to advance the performance, safety, lifetime, and production of your battery product.

This seminar is intended for battery researchers, developers, and manufacturers of all technical backgrounds. Whether you are new to materials analysis or a seasoned expert, you will walk away from this seminar with the knowledge of how to:

  • Accelerate battery cell development through in-operando evaluation of performance and lifetime
  • Optimize electrode development and coating for manufacturing processes
  • Design safer batteries through understanding the thermal and mechanical stability of your materials

A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

Agenda

9:30 - 10:00 AM
Check-In & Coffee
10:00 - 11:15 AM

Understanding Battery Cell Performance Through In-Operando Analysis

  • Assessment of whole cell performance through charge/discharge cycling by monitoring heat flow, reducing testing time dramatically compared to electrochemical options
  • Quantification of parasitic reactions and how these affect performance as well as passivation layer formation (SEI)
11:15 - 11:45 AM
Break
11:45 - 12:45 PM

Optimize Electrode Manufacturing with Slurry Characterization

  • Characterisation of slurry for coating performance with regard to structure and recovery which relates to irregular coating or sample run off from current collector.
  • Stability of slurry over time and rheology of powder additives to determine cohesive properties.
12:45 - 13:45 PM
Lunch
13:45 - 14:45 PM

Improve Battery Safety with Materials Characterization

  • Looking at decomposition temperatures of components like electrolyte, electrode binders and separators.
  • Mimicking sintering process to evaluate material stability and phase changes in material that can affect performance.
